The original Vesper - The 007 Martini - was named for the first Bond Girl, Vesper Lynd; the only woman Bond would ever love. In Flemming’s book, James orders:
Three of Gordon’s, one of vodka, half of Kina Lillet, shake it very well until it’s ice-cold. Then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?
I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold and very well made. (Casino Royale, 1953.)
In all the movies and books that follow, Bond never orders this drink again. If you’re familiar with Vesper’s fate, you’ll understand why - but this drink is too good to remain undercover.
